Airship Etiquette: A Field Guide to Manners Aboard the Great Dirigibles

Anyone can build an airship. Living aboard one without causing an international incident is the harder skill, and it is one the manuals rarely teach. After years of collecting accounts from captains, cooks, and at least one disgraced diplomat, I have assembled the etiquette that separates a respected passenger from one who gets left at the next mooring mast. Some of it is practical. Some of it is pure superstition. All of it will keep you in good standing with the crew.

Dining, Docking, and the Rules of the Deck

Begin with the table. Aboard an airship, the galley is small and the cook is powerful, so compliments are currency and complaints are remembered. Never refuse a dish outright; ask for a smaller portion instead. If you are seated at the captain's table, wait for the captain to lift a fork before you touch yours. On some vessels the captain will tap the table twice, a holdover from signaling the engine room that dinner was served and the watch could rotate. Do not tap back. It is not a joke to them.

Docking is where manners matter most. When a ship approaches a mast, all passengers not on duty are expected to stand clear of the gangway and keep their voices low. The ground crew takes their cues from sound as well as signal flags, and a shouted conversation can drown out a whistle. If you are disembarking, thank the mooring crew, not just the captain. They are the ones who caught you.

Deck rules are simple and strict. Never spit over the rail, because the wind aboard a moving airship has opinions and will return it to you. Never throw anything over the side, including ash. Weight matters on a dirigible, and so does the principle that what leaves the ship must be accounted for. If you smoke, do it in the designated box, and never near the gas cells, a rule that should not need explaining but apparently does.

Duels are a delicate subject. In port, the old codes still apply, and a challenge may be issued over a matter of honor, a debt, or a badly chosen word. Aboard ship, the captain's word outranks any code, and most captains forbid duels entirely. If you find yourself challenged, the correct response is to accept the challenge formally and then immediately refer the matter to the captain. This satisfies honor without spilling blood, and the crew will respect you for it. What you must never do is ignore a challenge. Silence is read as cowardice, and that reputation follows you from ship to ship.

Small Courtesies That Keep the Ship Afloat

Learn the names of the crew. Not just the officers, but the riggers, the coal passers, and the girl who mends the envelopes. Airships are small worlds, and the people who keep them flying notice who treats them as furniture. A passenger who remembers a name gets a warmer bunk, a better watch rotation, and a warning before the weather turns.

Respect the ship's bells. Every vessel keeps its own schedule of chimes for watches, meals, and emergencies, and passengers are expected to learn them within a day. Asking what a bell means is fine once. Asking every time is not.

Finally, mind your curiosity. Every airship has compartments passengers are not invited into, and every crew has a story they will not tell a stranger. Ask politely, accept the answer, and do not go poking at locked doors with a borrowed key. The fastest way to be put ashore at the next mast is to be found somewhere you were told not to go.

The sky is wide, but the ship is not. Manners are simply the grease that keeps a small, dangerous, beautiful world turning. Bring them with you, and you will always find a berth.
